About me

I am a petrologist with broad interests in magmatic and hydrothermal systems, and fluid-rock interactions, which my team investigates in the field, by laboratory experiments, and using thermodynamic and kinetic simulations. I have received Ph.D. in Earth and Planetary Sciences at McGill University in Montreal, and was a postdoctoral fellow at the Bayerisches Geoinstitut in Bayreuth, followed by appointment as assistant, then associate professor and institute director at the Charles University in Prague. Since 2015 I am a full professor of mineralogy and petrology at the University of Freiburg (Germany).

Research

My research interests include experimental and field approaches to magmatic and hydrothermal systems, fluid-rock interactions combined with physical chemistry, thermodynamics and numerical modeling. I conduct experimental studies of solid-melt-fluid equilibria at high pressures, develop thermodynamic equations of state for multicomponent melts and fluids, and use geodynamic models in order to apply these results to natural systems. My studies are applicable to generation and differentiation of magmas in the lithosphere, volcanic and geothermal systems, origin of ore deposits and reactive fluid flow.

Teaching and student supervision

I enjoy teaching a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses including introductory mineralogy, mineral resources, petrology, and thermodynamics. Advanced courses designed for master students cover magmatic and metamorphic processes, fluid-rock interaction, as well as property and reactivity of silicate materials. For industrial applications, I have designed exploration geology and geochemistry, run as an external short course. I am participating in a variety of seminars, student presentations, and soft-skill courses. In the past, I am also responsible for the service course Evolution of the Planet Earth offered as extracurricular activity to motivated undergraduates in natural sciences.
