We operate new, state-of-the-art technology (2022) for advanced elemental analysis in major and trace concentrations. The lab is equipped with the ESI New Wave Research 193 nm laser ablation system connected to an Agilent 7900 ICP-MS, providing exceptional precision and accuracy for microscale elemental analysis of solid materials and fluid inclusions.

 

The New Wave Research 193 nm ArF excimer laser ablation system utilizes a high-energy beam (up to 12 mJ) with a wavelength of 193 nm and a repetition rate of up to 500 Hz to ablate and vaporize material from the sample surface, transported to the Agilent 7900 ICP MS for separation and quantification of individual elements. The high sensitivity and accuracy of the Agilent 7900 ICP-MS allow for precise detection and quantification of trace elements, making it suitable for mineralogy, geochemistry, geochronology and environmental science research.

Quantification of the signals occurs via standard reference material (e.g. NIST 610, 612, 614). The NWR excimer laser is equipped with the TwoVol2 sample chamber which accommodates a small inner sampling cup in the larger sampling chamber. This results in tremendous improvement of washout times and signal reproducibility. Spot sizes can be varied in size (1-150 µm) and shape (round/rectangular). A 5MP camera and digital microscope with a resolution of <2 µm helps identify minor sample features.
